What is copyright?
Copyright is a form of protection grounded in the U.S. Constitution and granted by law for original works of authorship fixed in a tangible medium of expression. Copyright covers both published and unpublished works.

A copyright gives the owner of copyright the exclusive right to do and to authorize others to do the following:

To reproduce the work in copies or phonorecords;

To prepare derivative works based upon the work;

To distribute copies or phonorecords of the work to the public by sale or other transfer of ownership, or by rental, lease, or lending;

To perform the work publicly, in the case of literary, musical, dramatic, and choreographic works, pantomimes, and motion pictures and other audiovisual works;

To display the work publicly, in the case of literary, musical, dramatic, and choreographic works, pantomimes, and pictorial, graphic, or sculptural works, including the individual images of a motion picture or other audiovisual work.

What does copyright protect?
Copyright, a form of intellectual property-law, protects original works of authorship including literary, dramatic, musical, and artistic works, such as poetry, novels, movies, songs, computer software, and architecture. Copyright does not protect facts, ideas, systems, or methods of operation, although it may protect the way these things are expressed.

How is a copyright different from a patent or a trademark?
Copyright protects original works of authorship, while a patent protects inventions or discoveries. Ideas and discoveries are not protected by the copyright law, although the way in which they are expressed may be. A trademark protects words, phrases, symbols, or designs identifying the source of the goods or services of one party and distinguishing them from those of others.
How is a copyright different from a patent or a trademark?

When is my work protected?
Your work is under copyright protection the moment it is created and fixed in a tangible form that it is perceptible either directly or with the aid of a machine or device.

Do I have to register with your office to be protected?
No. In general, registration is voluntary. Copyright exists from the moment the work is created. You will have to register, however, if you wish to bring a lawsuit for infringement of a U.S. work.

Why should I register my work if copyright protection is automatic?
Registration is recommended for a number of reasons. Many choose to register their works because they wish to have the facts of their copyright on the public record and have a certificate of registration. Registered works may be eligible for statutory damages and attorney’s fees in successful litigation. Finally, if registration occurs within 5 years of publication, it is considered prima facie evidence in a court of law.

I’ve heard about a “poor man’s copyright.” What is it?
The practice of sending a copy of your own work to yourself is sometimes called a “poor man’s copyright.” There is no provision in the copyright law regarding any such type of protection, and it is not a substitute for registration.

the Ugly Poet, Beautiful Thoughts.

The first question that comes to mind when introduced to the Ugly Poet is, “Why would you call yourself an ugly poet?” But, it won’t be long after he starts speaking that you begin to understand the metaphor that is the Ugly Poet.

the Ugly Poet is good at what he does. His message is a quiet one that echoes reminiscent of Lawrence Fishburn screaming wake up at the end of School Daze. He makes you consider the world around you in new colors then erase them and restart. Saying that he is a conscious poet is like saying Superman was just a hero. He is more than that, he transcends that. He defines it. With infinite possibility and very stated proclamation of room to grow, the Ugly Poet is sincere in his modest efforts to change the world.

As he states:

“The book of Proverbs says that, “beauty is fleeting.” I believe that is true with my thoughts. It’s human nature that we evolve or revolve. So the way I look at the world today may be different than the way I do next week. It doesn’t mean I’m wishy-washy. It just means that I’m growing. The only constant is change. Understand that, and you’ll have the answer to life. Okay, I’m kidding right there, but it’s a good bit of knowledge to have.”

M. D. Hennington. Medea Publishing

M.D. was our poetry/spoken word winner for August. She was estatic to recieve her publishing package. The prize is invaluable for what it represents to the writer. To see your words officially immortalized is an awe inspiring experience. It validates your dreams. It shows you that anything is possible. You can truly go anywhere you want to go. All that from winning a poetry contest? Yes, all of that.

As M.D. states:

To God be the Glory.

May your test become your testimonies.

M. D. Hennington has graced us with a work of art. Her words speak of personal deliverance, conviction, pain, renewal and redemption. Her poetry embraces a strong relationship with God and an even stronger spiritual understanding. There is a message in every verse and a reveal on every page.

Growing, Knowing and Learning is indeed a walk in the real world of emotion and a sprint toward self-realization.

Christopher Marshall, My Flavor: The object of Natural Perfection.

Christopher Marshall a.k.a. ”The hot to death poet” is a student at the University of Southern Mississippi working towards a bachelor’s in Sport’s Administration. This poet brings aims to captivate his readers. An inspiring singer/songwriter, the hot to death poet aligns his words in a soul searching, past reaching, all-consuming manner to pull the reader not just into his words but into his life.

He finds comfort in his art. With tales of his family, mainly his inspiration from his grandmother, Christopher is rare and significant in his tales. His poetry is meant to tug and embody, writhe and foresee.

As he states:

“I am a descendent of greatness and I pray that I will descend into a future of unlimited possibilities and dreams come true; however, first I must receive the support of you my audience. … and I guarantee you, your support shall be well worth it.”
